Departure
Carcassonne (Aude)
Arrival
Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port (Pyrénées-Atlantiques)
The Chemin du Piémont Pyrénéen, also known as the GR®78, links Carcassonne to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port over nearly 600 kilometres along the northern foothills of the Pyrenees. It is one of the least frequented Camino routes in France, you will often walk alone. Elevation gain is more demanding than on other Camino routes, and resupply points can be sparse. The path is waymarked and well served at the main stops, less so in isolated rural sections. Works in aeroplane mode to save battery, useful on the long stages between villages. The path crosses a regulated section of the Pyrénées National Park in the Ossau valley (Fabrèges area, segment 3): bivouac regulated from 7pm to 9am, more than one hour's walk from road access points or the boundaries of the park's core zone. Fires prohibited. Dogs prohibited, including on a lead.
