A waymarked but exposed trail crossing Iceland's volcanic highlands, with glacial river fords to wade on foot and a mountain extension beyond Þórsmörk. The route is committing: fast-changing weather, open mineral terrain and a short walking season limited to summer. Accommodation relies on the huts and campsites run by Ferðafélag Íslands, which often fill up and must be booked ahead. There is no resupply along the way, so you carry all of your food. The guide covers the whole route with the huts, the camping areas and the ford crossings. Mobile coverage is almost nonexistent in the highlands, so the guide works offline, essential where there is no signal.
