Arrival
Grächen
A cross-border high route that circles the Matterhorn, linking several high mountain passes, including a glacier crossing at the Theodulpass and the Valcournera pass with cabled sections. The route runs through two countries and three languages, alternating between the Swiss valleys of the Valais and the Italian valleys of the Aosta region, which means dealing with two hut systems and two currencies. It is meant for hikers who are self-reliant on glacier terrain and comfortable at sustained altitude. Lodging is in valley-floor villages and in high refuges or rifugi, with decent resupply in the resorts along the way but sparse on the high sections. The guide covers the whole loop with accommodation on both sides, the huts and the resupply points. Mobile coverage is absent on the high sections and at the passes; the guide works offline, essential where there is no signal.
