Arrival
Zermatt
One of the most committing of the Alpine circuits, straddling the Swiss Valais and the Italian Piedmont around the Monte Rosa massif. The route strings together high passes and glaciated sections, some of which call for alpine experience and glacier equipment, and much of it runs through high mountain terrain with no easy way out. It is walked from one high-altitude hut to the next, with resupply concentrated in the valleys and sparse on the higher stretches. The loop only opens up in high summer, once the passes are clear. The guide covers the whole tour with its mountain huts, valley lodgings and resupply points. There is no mobile signal on much of the route, and the guide works offline.
