Arrival
Barèges
A high-mountain loop through a massif classified as a nature reserve, where movement and wild camping are regulated. One section is unwaymarked at the col de Barèges and calls for navigation skills. The Bastan hut is closed to the public with no reopening date announced, so stage ends have to be rearranged around the neighbouring huts. A variant extends the route and spreads it over more days. The guide covers the loop and its variant with the huts, water points and the reserve's regulated bivouac areas. Mobile coverage is absent along much of the route, and the guide works offline. Bivouac: within the Néouvielle national nature reserve, permitted only at the Orédon and Aubert lakes, from 7 pm to 9 am. Dogs, swimming and wading are prohibited throughout the reserve. A prefectural order of 24 July 2026 bans bivouacking and all use of fire, including stoves, in wooded areas of the Hautes-Pyrénées and within 200 m of them.
