Arrival
Les Cabannes
A bivouac loop across a high pastoral plateau, preceded by a long road climb up from the valley. The route follows the GR®10 over part of the plateau and wide tracks the rest of the way, which keeps the walking within reach of younger hikers. The summer pastures are grazed throughout the season and shepherds' huts are spread along the way. There is no accommodation and no shop on the plateau, so resupply means walking back down to the valley or carrying everything from the start. The guide covers the whole loop with the huts, the water points and the track network that makes each day longer or shorter. Works offline, essential where there is no signal. Bivouac: the plateau lies outside any national park core area and no local order restricts it. Bivouacking is tolerated for a single night, with the tent pitched late in the day and taken down early, leaving no trace. Camp more than 200 m from water catchments, roads and dwellings, and away from grazing herds. Wild camping, longer or more visible, remains forbidden.
