Arrival
Lac des Mesches
A hut-to-hut loop at the heart of the Mont Bégo rock engravings site, in the most strictly regulated sector of the Mercantour National Park. The route crosses from one valley to the next over high passes, with an out-and-back to reach the Valmasque hut. The passes are crossed on scree, with a tricky section at the Baisse de Valmasque. Every stage ends at a hut, staffed only in season. The guide covers the loop with the huts, water points and road access. Mobile coverage is absent along most of the route, and the guide works offline. Bivouac: core of the Mercantour National Park, allowed from 7 pm to 9 am, more than one hour's walk from a road, one night only in the same place. In the Merveilles and Fontanalbe valleys, it is only permitted on the areas near the Merveilles and Fontanalbe huts. Dogs are banned, even on a lead, and metal-tipped poles are banned in the engravings zone.
